Robert Zeiher joined the 2nd Company of Infantry Regiment 75 in October 1938. After attending the War School in Wischau-Didiz,
he was transferred to Infantry Regiment 420, where the 125th Infantry Division was being formed. With this division, he participated in the Balkan Campaign
of 1941 and marched against Russia as a lieutenant. Zeiher was present at the capture of Sevastopol as commander
of the 7th Company of Infantry Regiment 420. After being severely wounded and subsequently hospitalized,
he was able to begin studying forestry. In October 1944, he took command of a battle group in the Kaysersberg area of Alsace and was then seconded to the Waffen-SS. On January 16, 1945, he was promoted to
Major in the Reserves. and commander of the 1st Battalion of the SS Grenadier Regiment "Radolfzell" (formed from the SS NCO School
"Radolfzell"), he was awarded the Knight's Cross after achieving extraordinary defensive successes against a US elite division.
